Job Summary
The Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of fiber-optic network infrastructure. The role ensures reliable, high-quality network performance by deploying fiber systems, resolving faults, performing preventive maintenance, and supporting customers and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
· Fiber Installation & Deployment
· Install fiber-optic cables across underground ducts, buildings, and aerial routes.
· Route, secure, and label fiber cables according to engineering standards and safety requirements.
· Install and integrate related network equipment to ensure proper connectivity and signal flow.
Splicing & Termination
· Perform fusion splicing of fiber strands with minimal signal loss. · Terminate fiber cables using approved connectors, patch panels, and enclosures. · Ensure all terminations meet industry performance and quality standards.
Testing & Network Validation
· Conduct fiber testing using optical power meters, OTDRs, and related tools.
· Measure signal strength, attenuation, and continuity.
· Validate network performance and certify installations before service activation.
Troubleshooting & Repairs
· Diagnose and resolve fiber faults including cuts, bends, signal degradation, and equipment failures.
· Carry out corrective repairs promptly to restore services and minimize downtime.
· Support emergency fault response and escalation when required.
Preventive Maintenance
· Perform routine inspections and maintenance on fiber routes, splice closures, cabinets, and associated infrastructure.
· Identify and mitigate potential risks before they impact network performance.
Documentation & Reporting
· Maintain accurate records of fiber routes, splicing schedules, test results, and repair activities.
· Update network documentation to support audits, troubleshooting, and future expansion.
Customer & Stakeholder Support
· Communicate clearly with customers, contractors, and internal teams regarding installations, faults, and maintenance activities.
· Explain technical issues in simple terms and provide timely service updates.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Strong understanding of fiber-optic networks and installation practices
2. Proficiency in fusion splicing and fiber testing tools
3. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve network issues efficiently
4. Good documentation and reporting skills
5. Strong communication and customer service skills
6. Ability to work independently and under time pressure
Qualifications & Experience
1. Relevant technical certification or training in fiber optics or telecommunications
2. Hands-on experience in fiber installation, splicing, and testing
3. Knowledge of safety standards and industry best practices
4. Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience in deploying, operating, and maintaining FTTH networks within an ISP environment, including last-mile fiber installation, splicing, testing, fault resolution, and customer activation
